Hot weather tends to be associated with beach days, minimal make-up and a souped-up bodycare routine. For people with curly, coily and textured hair, though, summer often presents an entirely different set of challenges. Namely, hair can feel noticeably drier, fluffier and more prone to breakage, thanks to the increase in humidity, plus the presence of sweat, chlorine and salt water, all of which can make textured hair that much harder to style in hot weather.
Naturally, heatwaves exacerbate these issues. “Curly, coily and textured hair responds differently to hot weather, as the hair fibre readily absorbs the moisture from humid air, as well as perspiration from the scalp. Both these things cause the hair shaft to swell,” Tish Hankerson, licensed cosmetologist and founder of Curls and Texture U and Salon Brazyl, explains.
